About Us

At De Fryske Wrâld (The Frisian World), our mission is simple but powerful: to preserve and promote the Frisian language. As a nonprofit organization, we are dedicated to keeping this unique language alive through books, education, and community outreach. Every day, we work to ensure that Frisian—a language with deep roots and rich history—continues to thrive for generations to come.

Our Project: Skriuwer.com

At Skriuwer, we’re more than just a team—we’re a global community of people who love books and languages. In Frisian, "Skriuwer" means "writer," and that’s at the heart of what we do: creating and sharing Frisian books with readers worldwide. Wherever you are in the world, Skriuwer is here to inspire learning.

About the Frisian Language and Friesland

Frisian is one of the oldest languages in Europe, closely related to English and Dutch, and is spoken by about 500,000 people in the province of Friesland (Fryslân), located in the northern Netherlands. It’s the second official language of the Netherlands, but like many minority languages, Frisian faces the challenge of survival in a modern, globalized world.

Friesland is a province known for its proud cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes, and a deep connection to the sea. Beyond its beauty and history, Friesland is one of the few places in the world where a unique language like Frisian is still spoken in daily life, from schools to homes and businesses. But with fewer people learning Frisian as their first language, it’s crucial that we act now to preserve it.

Why It Matters

Languages like Frisian aren’t just modes of communication—they’re vital parts of a people’s identity and history. Every time we publish a book, it’s a step towards preserving that heritage. Without active efforts like ours, languages like Frisian could fade, taking with them centuries of culture, stories, and tradition.

How You Can Help

By purchasing a book from Skriuwer.com or donating to De Fryske Wrâld, you’re directly supporting our mission to keep Frisian alive. All earnings from our sales go straight back into creating new books, developing educational resources, and reaching more people who want to learn about or contribute to the preservation of Frisian.

As a nonprofit organization, we rely on the help of people who understand the importance of keeping a language—and a culture—alive. Your contribution, no matter how small, makes a real difference.
