Dutch is a language from Europe, mainly spoken in the Netherlands and Belgium. It started from Old Germanic roots and evolved over time. Today, about 23 million people speak Dutch as their main language. It has also been taken to colonies in the past, so you'll find Dutch speakers in places like Suriname and the Caribbean too. The closest language to Dutch is Afrikaans, spoken in South Africa. It developed from 17th-century Dutch settlers. Both languages share many words and grammar structures.
