Irish, or "Gaeilge", is a Celtic language native to Ireland. It traces its roots back thousands of years to early Celtic tribes. Today, while English is the dominant language in Ireland, Irish is still spoken in specific regions known as the Gaeltacht, mainly in the west. It's estimated that around 1.7 million people have some knowledge of Irish, but daily speakers are much fewer. Scottish Gaelic, spoken in parts of Scotland, is the language most similar to Irish. Both languages share a common origin and have many similarities in words and pronunciation. Irish has a rich history and remains an important symbol of Irish cultural identity.
