Portuguese is a Romance language that evolved from Latin. It originated in the Iberian Peninsula, where Portugal is. Today, it's not only spoken in Portugal but also in Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and other countries, with over 250 million speakers worldwide. Portuguese is similar to Spanish because both languages developed nearby and share many words and grammar rules. Speakers of Portuguese and Spanish can often understand each other, especially when speaking slowly.
