Norwegian is the official language of Norway, located in Northern Europe. With roots in the North Germanic group of languages, it evolved from Old Norse spoken by the Vikings. Today, around 5 million people speak Norwegian. Interestingly, Norway has two official written forms: Bokmål and Nynorsk. Both are used in public administration, schools, and media. The language most similar to Norwegian is Danish, followed closely by Swedish. All three languages share many words and, often, speakers can understand each other, especially in written form.
