Slovak is a Slavic language. Its roots trace back to ancient Slavic tribes in Central Europe. Today, Slovak is mainly spoken in Slovakia by over 5 million people. It's the official language of Slovakia. The alphabet used is the Latin script with special characters unique to the language. The closest language to Slovak is Czech. Both Slovak and Czech were once considered dialects of the same language, and they share many words and grammar rules. Many Slovaks can understand and speak Czech because of the languages' similarities.
