✅ Germany First Genocide: The Herero and Namaqua
Long before the Holocaust, German colonial forces committed the first genocide of the 20th century — the systematic massacre of the Herero and Namaqua peoples in German South West Africa (now Namibia) between 1904 and 1908. Up to 100,000 people were killed. Survivors were placed in concentration camps. Germany only officially acknowledged this as genocide in 2021.
✅ The Clean Wehrmacht Myth
For decades after WWII, Germans maintained the myth that atrocities were committed by the SS alone while regular army soldiers were innocent. Historians have since documented that the Wehrmacht was extensively involved in war crimes, including mass shootings of civilians, murder of Soviet POWs, and complicity in the Holocaust.
✅ The Stasi Secret Files
East Germany Stasi (secret police) maintained files on an estimated one-third of the population — one of history most extensive surveillance systems. After reunification in 1990, files were preserved revealing extraordinary infiltration of families, churches, and workplaces. Thousands of West Germans were also Stasi informants.
✅ Former Nazis in Postwar Government
Former SS and Gestapo members occupied senior positions in West German intelligence (BND), judiciary, and academia well into the 1980s. The BND founding director Reinhard Gehlen was a former Nazi intelligence chief whose entire Soviet spy network was transferred wholesale to the new German intelligence service — with CIA approval.
Kurt Georg Kiesinger, West German Chancellor from 1966 to 1969, had been a member of the Nazi Party since 1933 and worked in Nazi propaganda during the war. His election sparked protests and he was famously slapped in public by anti-Nazi activist Beate Klarsfeld.

Auke
Hi, I'm Auke, a passionate advocate for the Frisian language with deep roots in Frisian culture. I grew up in this vibrant heritage and have dedicated myself to preserving our unique linguistic identity. It's spoken by about 500,000 people, mostly in Friesland, Netherlands. As a key contributor to Skriuwer.com, I work with others to create books that educate and inspire, helping ensure the Frisian language, recognized as an official language alongside Dutch, stays alive for future generations. My work comes from a strong belief in language as the foundation of history and belonging. I'm proud that proceeds from these books support nonprofit efforts like De Fryske Wrâld. Join me in sustaining this ancient European tongue. Let's keep Frisian thriving.
