From 13 British colonies and the Declaration of Independence to Civil War, westward expansion, two World Wars, the Civil Rights movement, and superpower status — the United States' 250-year history has shaped the modern world more than any other nation.

Overview

The territory now called the United States was home to thousands of indigenous nations for at least 15,000 years before European contact. Spanish, French, and British colonizers arrived in the 1500–1600s. The 13 British colonies declared independence in 1776 under Thomas Jefferson's famous words: "all men are created equal." The Constitution of 1787 created a revolutionary system of democratic governance. The Civil War (1861–1865) ended slavery and preserved the Union. The 20th century made the US the world's dominant economic and military power.
